I'm not picking on WIT, because their campaign to support employed breastfeeding women is very much a positive effort, but I do want to point out something about their logo representing employed breastfeeding women. The logo is headless. I tend to want to let small aberrations like this go past unremarked, especially when the intention is clearly to support breastfeeding, but promoting women without their heads bothers me. I had communicated with WIT earlier about my discomfort, and then let it go, but a conversation I had last night was very edifying. We had some friends drop in that we have known since we were all adolescents/young adults, and we were reminiscing. The husband was reminding us of a mutual friend, who he said was clearly dysfunctional in his relationship to women. As proof, he said, "Can you believe it? He drew beautiful, voluptuous women with no heads!" I wouldn't throw the WIT baby out with the bathwater, but I hope they rethink their logo next year. http://www.worldwit.org/RuminaWinner.aspx And even if not, it is something for all of us to think about.
