I had 2 cases recently like this, they had stated on an intake form that they didn't want to breastfeed for "personal reasons" I just inquired a little further (both were also very young, 19 and 21) and one thought and was told by a family member that she couldn't breastfeed b/c she didn't eat well, as soon as I said that wasn't necessary, she wanted to breastfeed, unfortunately, she was on day 5 and post engorgement (already soft), infant latched and took 15 g, I reccomended decreasing bottlefeed amount, skin to skin baby led latching, and then pumping (w/ rental), and follow up in 2 days, meanwhile the person who told her not to breastfeed must have felt guilty, b/c she paid for a consultation w/ a CNM who gave her sheilds, and sold an expensive pump- but told not use use it for at least a week so as not to cuase over supply (remember this mom had never put baby to breast or pumped since birth)- on my followup baby was down 2 oz and they were confused by the conflicting advice. very sad- her grandmother said, "I just thought she would fail at breastfeeding" -we worked on it a bit, but mom was discouraged and didn't use the punp more than 2 times and gave up. Other mom, luckily was still engorged, thought she shouldn't breastfeed b/c she smokes, funny though she did initiate in the hospital, still not that motivated either, "didn't have funds to rent pump" so is just using manual and only several times a day, baby had a hard time latching but took 1 oz w/ sheild, but on follow up, mom wasn't using sheild or latching directly, I'm sure she'll tell me in a few weeks that she just didn't have any milk anymore- well at least I got her to get more breastmilk than she would've had she been to a different pedi. the fault is with the system, no one had a conversation with these girls prenantaly about benefits and myths I felt mad at the L&D or postpartum for probably just asking and noting in the chart w/out discussion, they say, they don't have time or mom is in labor post partum etc... still, they were there for 3 days, at anytime someone could have had the discussion with them, there should be some requirement to put in the chart, "benefits of BF/ risks of FF discussed" there are countless other "things" that nurses have to sign off about education wise this makes me wonder, how do BFHI hospitals prove this step "inform all pregnant women..." *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
