The question was why undress and stress a baby to check for only intake...not getting the weight in general for assessment of overall weight gain. Simple. I have all my moms and babes skin to skin anyway. Might as well undress the baby. I don't think of it as stressful, they are not crying or frustrated, they are comfy and being held gently while being undressed and show no signs they don't like it, and if they do start to fuss we simply stop and wait. No need to upset a baby or rush them. They are weighed tummy down on a comfy surface and then into mommas arms for time to just snuggle and be skin to skin while we talk....before we even worry about how to latch, etc. This is why I schedule appointments between feedings so babies are not coming to me hungry and frustrated and upset. If they are, we would feed, calm, and wait. Granted my visits last a couple of hours at the minimum, but I prefer it that way. There is no rush, lots of patience and gentle handling of babies so not a lot of stress and crying.
