Chicago: We Don't Need No Stinkin" Music Journalism! [What to Expect from Smaller Cities? Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2006 15:57:31 -0700 Chicago Sun-Times Drops Music Staff Post By Susan Elliott MusicalAmerica.com May 30, 2006 Wynne Delacoma, staff music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, is to retire next month, following Daniel Barenboim's final concert as music director of the Chicago Symphony, on June 17. The Sun-Times will eliminate her position altogether and use only free-lance writers. Delacoma's career with the Sun-Times began in 1982, as a free-lance writer. She joined the staff full time in 1990, first as a features writer and, in 1991, as classical music critic. An adjunct faculty member at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, where she teaches a graduate course in arts reporting and criticism, Delacoma was the dance and backup music critic for the Milwaukee Journal from 1980-82, before it merged with the Milwaukee Sentinel. The Chicago native holds a master's degree in music history and literature from Northwestern University, and a BS in journalism from Milwaukee's Marquette University. Delacoma will remain in Chicago, where she will continue to teach and, she says, remain active in the classical music field. She says she did not consider that her position might not be filled when she took an early retirement buyout offer. Her husband will remain with the newspaper, where he is a sports copy editor.
