My first question is how old is the baby? If babe is around 4-6 months or older she might be able to take the milk from a sippy cup. Also is the mother trying to give the bottles? Many breastfed babies will not take a bottle from mom, but may take it from Dad or Grandma or another caregiver. Also, have the person feeding the bottle try some different positions, some babies will prefer a breastfeeding type position, or they may do better in a position that doesn't remind them of being at the breast. For some babes that means holding the baby outward, so they are not facing towards the person feeding but away from them. Also some babes like the milk very warm, since that is what they are used to and also warming the nipple up under some warm running water can be helpful. If the baby is getting towards solid age and the baby absolutely refuses the bottle mom could consider solids, but that would be an individual decision, based on how this baby is gaining well, whether or not they are ready for solids and an allergy history in the family. With my first babe I had to go back to work at 12 weeks, what finally worked was to give her a bottle in the middle of the night before she was fully awake. My mom stayed with me and as soon as she starting stirring I quickly got the bottle. She was laying on her side and took it without problem. Sometimes moms will have to try many different things before they find what works. And maybe if she doesn't take the bottle mom can think of other ways to feed her the milk, cup feeding, syringe or eye dropper. I know many babies that will reverse their feedings when mom is at daycare...so they won't take in much while mom is away but once back with mom they will make up for it by increased nursing and sometimes will even nurse a lot in the night to make up for it. Good luck with this Mom:) Sheena Carnes, BSN RN LLL Leader In windy but sunny northeast Iowa *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
