Norma, You asked about listing five reasons to breastfeed for a newspaper article and have already received good responses, but I would make sure that one of five refers to mom's benefits. Many women tell me they know breastfeeding is best for baby, but then get swayed by the power of formula advertising and HCP's who reassure them that if they can't (breastfeed) baby will be just fine. So giving moms (and Dads) something to ponder about her own health and well being that she's unlikely to find in a can of convenience is important, too. Breastfeeding may lower the risks of breast cancer, decrease incidence of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis later in life, and provide mom the benefits of the mothering hormones that make life with baby easier. This is long and perhaps too complex but gives moms a strong statement that can make them want to know more. I just find too many moms never think of how breastfeeding benefits them, as well as, their babies.
