A mother of a 2 week old called with a question about Restasis which her
doctor prescribed for dry eyes. She was told to stop taking it during
pregnancy, and is wondering if she can take it now. It is not in Hale, but
the medication bottle says it is cyclosporine opthalmic. This medication,
taken orally would be taken with caution, as cyclosporine is an
immunosuppressant. The AAP cautions that cyclosporine is a cytotoxic drug
that may interfere with cellular metabolism of the nursing infant.

Is there any information about taking this medication through eye drops
twice a day? She has been told that she will need to take it for a year to
achieve the desired effect- her eyes making more tears on their own. She
will await any information,or if she doesn't get more information she will
wait and take it after the baby weans.
