The Texas Dept of State Health Services has a good pamphlet on BF and Family
Planning in English and Spanish. It is a chart listing all the methods and
how they affect breastfeeding, their PG rates, etc. It clearly states that
Depo should be given after 6 weeks PP and there is a risk of reduced milk
supply. I give this out to all the mothers I am loaning an Elite pump to for
hospitalized babies or when doing home consultations. We are trying to give
them out to moms in our WIC clinics also. We have lots of doctors down here
trying to get moms on some sort of chemical BC method before leaving the
hospital. I once had a polite disagreement with an OB who had BF both her
children about the importance of waiting 6 weeks before giving this shot or
other hormone contraception. She felt they would be pregnant again if she
did not start them on something immediately. Check your state health dept
for something similiar.
