ATLANTA - The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said outgoing federal Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson was an extraordinary health ambassador. Dr. Julie Gerberding said on Friday that Thompson was a champion for the health protection of every American. "He leaves us a safer and healthier world as his legacy. He is also the first to remind us that our work is not done yet!" Gerberding said in a statement. The 63-year-old Thompson resigned Friday, saying he was likely to pursue a job in the private sector after nearly 40 years in politics and government. She said his leadership helped the department combat common health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and breast cancer. She added that he also worked to protect Americans from terrorism and emerging threats like SARS, monkeypox, and avian influenza.
