<<Foods rich in LNA (alph-linolenic aci) are found in plant sources such as flax seed or meal, flax oil, canola oil, canola oil mayonnaise, walnuts, walnut oil, Brazil nuts, soybeans, wheat germ, and raw spinach. The body donverts LNA into DHA. >> though it's a very inefficient process. humans are probably meant to get long chain omega 3's from fish oil. the whole algal DHA thing is absolutely frightening to me. I'm all about the 'whole' <<DHA can also be found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines, tuna, and fish oils (wild fish caught in uncontaminated waters are best).>> Wild salmon, sardines and anchovies are about it for me in terms of safety. many people find sardines and/or anchovies unpalatable which leaves wild salmon. Pricewise, it's out of range for many people. While the 'safe fish'/food route is optimal, Molecularly distilled fish oil is a cost effective, safe, toxin free route that most people can afford. The fish oil at Sam's/Costco are molecularly distilled, are very fresh b/c of the high turnover and at $$7.99/$6.99 for *300* standard strength caps are in the price range that a significant number of persons can afford. <<Depleted Mother Syndrome is a real problem out there, and improving nutrition is one way to improve overall physical and mental well being.>> absolutely. I've just read an absolutely fabulous book by Raffelock and Rountree on Postpartum Health and Recovery. will have to look up the name. It was really really good. Very few US mothers would need additional high omega six oils/sources (nuts/seeds and their oils) but many will be very deficient in long chain omega 3 EFA's. the oils we get from nuts and seeds are important, but not really to be relied upon for DHA/EPA sufficiency.
