Hello, Nancy. I have a few thoughts, though I don't know if any of them will fit this situation or be really helpful. From the mom's description, it seems that her 2 mo old baby refused to nurse on the left breast during the worst of the infection, but now is willing to come to breast again. I am wondering if perhaps baby is willing to come to breast (maybe milk doesn't taste quite so salty now) *but* since there isn't much milk there, baby gets the initial letdown amount, and then sort of "hangs out" at breast without doing a lot of deep, jaw-dropping sucking, just waiting for mom to decide to switch breasts? I have seen babies do this in other situations where they couldn't get much milk from the breast. If this might be the case, this mother might want to follow each nursing with 5 minutes of pumping on the left breast only for 2-3 days, then see if the milk supply increases in left breast by day 3 or 4. If baby is not easily distracted, mother could try massaging the portion of the breast that feels soft. Sometimes massage helps to increase supply over time, especially massaging the lower half of the breast. Does this mother do any leaking, perhaps when breasts are at their most full? I have worked with a couple of moms who wore breast shells for inverted nipples when the supply was low. The constant pressure of the breast shell on the areola encouraged leaking, and that gradually increased the milk supply. She could try wearing a shell only on the left breast, if lopsided-ness doesn't bother her.
