I hope this reply is not too late to be useful. It is not only possible
but likely that an infant would coordinate swallowing better at breast
than on the bottle. Are there any signs of aspiration while the baby
breastfeeds? (mistimed swallowing sounds, coughing, little funny
gurgling noises, increasing nasal congestion as the feeding
progresses?) If not, the mom can try breastfeeding him and see if his
breathing remains clear and he remains healthy.
It should be possible to do a videofloroscopic swallowing study while
breastfeeding. The machine would have to be redirected , but most of
them are moveable.
