Perhaps the "whole nine yards" is in reference to the former gumwood trees (and black cabbage, and others) of St. Helena Island which were/are about 8 meters tall (9 yards) and how they were utilized for wood and tanning. I hope they come back! The island is in less communication with the outside world than it has in 200 years.
