Regarding a couple recent posts on Lactnet, a couple hundred emails to me this year and lots of patients who have transferred to my office: Doctor who focus parents on weight gain and percentiles in the second six months of drive me crazy. Obviously, SOME babies need extra attention for caloric issues and some babies have developmental delay and weight issues, but the vast, vast, vast majority of slow-gaining seven to twelve month olds are just fine and need breast milk exclusively or primarily. The push to give solids (cooked meats with olive oil!?) has very little science to support it. It takes breast milk out of a baby's mouth, replaces it with lesser foods and creates needless anxiety and ambivalence about breastfeeding in general. Do not let this happen to your friends.
