"Ped take a stool sample and tells mom that her milk has too much lactose and to start using soy" "So now when any breastfed baby comes in with problems--small or large--the solution is stool testing" These quotes from two different posts are awfully depressing to me on a couple of levels. All those poor parents who don't know any better and are being thoughtlessly influenced to make what is nearly always an inferior feeding decision! Also, why do those anti-breastfeeding docs get the moms who work so hard to continue, and I spend so much time cheerleading and encouraging and get moms who wean at the drop of hat? I had a first-time mom recently who was very concerned about her baby's sudden more frequent nursing at 6 weeks of age. I had her come for a weight check and reassurance visit. Baby had gained just over a pound in 10 days! Baby was under 6 lbs at birth and now over 8 lbs, filled out nicely, rarely cring, etc. I reassured, explained growth spurts, praised mom for following baby's cues. The next day she went to her OB for a postpartum check. He took one look at the bottle of expressed milk she had brought with (nervous about nursing in public) and told her it was too thin and she better put the baby on formula. Baby was fully weaned within 2 weeks. I could go on and on.
