If the mom has low Potassium and iron levels, one would think the first plan of action would be to improve her diet, especially if she is only nursing this sparingly. Since breastfeeding is a *normal* biological function, I would think attention to her diet would be the first step even if she was exclusively nursing a small baby. It sounds like another case of Blame Breastfeeding rather than 'first do no harm' and trying the most sensible solution first. Besides, it's my unprofessional guess that in the later stages of lactation, when feedings are few and far btwn, the breasts produce milk which contains smaller levels of potassium and iron. Such small amounts are found in breastmilk to begin with, I highly doubt that weaning would make a difference, and that her levels would suddenly soar! Sounds like an improvement in diet is a good way to start, then go to step 2 (multi vitamin?) if no improvement is seen in her potassium and iron levels.
