One of my wife's first jobs on coming to DC was to keep the books for
a local night club, now defunct.  She also took reservation calls.  When
Nat King Cole was the club's guest entertainer, she got a call from someone
claiming that NKC had specially arranged a reservation for his party, did
they have it recorded? Ever sans guile, my wife to be replied, "I'm sorry,
we have no record of a reservation arranged for you, but we still have
tables available and can reserve one for you." I wonder whether this made
the caller feel good or bad.
