Yeah.  Dang it!  I confess I only skimmed your post because I'm trying to
catch up, but I think you've hit on one of *several* major problems we face.
And I don't really know what the solutions are...

We were the lucky ones, in a way, starting out as LLLLs some years back.
Our help was as good as it got, poor as it was, so we didn't hurt anyone by
trying our hardest.  That's no longer true.
