When the Metropolitan Opera still gave spring tours, the over-large theatre in Boston was miked, and I minded. In Milwaukee they "enhance" the sound in the dead spot in the front right of the hall, and I would never anywhere near it again. In Verona last summer, I heard the first night of their opera festival (Verdi's Requiem, actually) with no amplification for an enormous Roman stone arena, with attendance of 10,000 (a light night, I think) and although distant, the soprano still amazed me.
