A freind of mine was recently telling me (yes Penelope this was you if you're reading this) about some videos she had been watching of formula feeding mothers sleeping with their babies and breastfeeding mothers doing the same thing. I've passed this on by email to the American Academy of Pediatricians and the SIDS foundation in the States. The breastfeedng mothers, as many of us know from personal experience, made safe space for their babies in the bed with their bodies and arms whilst asleep. Conversely she reported seeing the formula feeding mothers spend most of their sleeping time with their backs to the baby. This struck me as making cosleeping dangerous for the formula fed babies but not for the breastfed babies. If anyone has more research on this in case they come back to me I'd be interested to hear about it.
