>I agree that different women have different pain thresholds and will feel >sensations differently (learned this with my two kids) BUT (and this is a >big BUT) I have seen too many mothers who have the most horrible trauma to >their nipples and say, "But I was told some pain was normal so I just kept >at it." Me too......I ask mothers if the pain is getting worse, or better as the days have gone by. Tenderness is common, and yes, soome pain, but pain/tenderness associated with a poor latch does not improve in time. In fact it often gets worse. If a mother is still complaining of soreness on (say) day 3 or 4 or 5, and it is not getting better, then I think it is safe to assume this mum's positioning needs help....and I don't care how many people have looked at it and said it's fine ; ) Sometimes, soreness and an apparently ok latch go together, but I think that's probably because I/we don't yet know enough about how to make it good for everyone.
