Mark,

Similarly marked white ball clay pipes were recovered at the Ballast Point Whaling Station (CA-SDI-12953) at the mouth of San Diego Bay (California). These exhibited rouletted impressions separated by "INGOUDA" and "SPARNAAY" on the stems. They were also found in the whaler's blacksmith layer at CA-12,000, which lay on top a 18th century Spanish cannon battery. The historical date for those whaling sites is 1858-1886, but most of the deposits are 1860s. Smoke Pfiefer examined these specimens and can tell you more.
