Artur Rodzinski was one of the most brilliant conductors in an era which had most of the "greats". In spite of mis-information in the New York Times when Maazel was appointed Musical Director last year and the claim was made that this was the first time anyone had held, at one time or another, that position with two of the top "Five", Maazel's second top five job being his prior years in Cleveland. Mr. Rodzinski held not only held that title with the New York Philharmonic but as well the same position with the orchestras of Chicago and Cleveland with detours in Los Angles, Philadelphia (as Stokowski's Assistant) and training the newly formed NBC Symphony for Toscanini. Not bad!! Much of his work was available on the Dante label (pirated from the original Columbia's), no longer with us, as well some of the vanity press releases by Cleveland, Chicago, etc, also feature his work. Perhaps the best "Scotch" Symphony ever recorded was his with Chicago, available on their first mega release of performances by their various musical directors. The Rodzinski recordings stand the test of time amazingly well and show that there was much life in the Cleveland Orchestra before the Szell era. "Our Two Lives" written by his widow, Halina Rodzinski, and published by Scribners in 1976 gives a certain look, one sided though it is, at their life. Lots of good pictures!
