Ok, this is the third time I'm trying to send this, so we'll see if my computer will cooperate. Makes me wonder if there's a hidden message here, or sabotage or something! Anyway, I read Dr. Rob's post about gathering co-sleeping stories for James McKenna and I second that motion. Actually, I will be attending the meeting with Dr. McKenna and others next week, where we will discuss the recommendations we, as a state, want to make regarding this issue. I have posted here before about this when, a few months ago, our perinatal organization had a section in their newsletter about SIDS that gave out erroneous information and even cited Babywise as a source, something they have recanted (the Babywise citation that is). My letter to the editor was published in the next issue, along with a rebuttal by a doc who runs our children's sleep lab here. She will also be attending the meeting. I have just gotten the packet of info/articles they sent out to all the participants in preparation for the meeting and I must say, along with a few good articles, a couple by James McKenna et al, there is some info that makes me just shake my head, like this sentence: "Even though some studies suggest that the benefits of bed sharing include more arousals, less stage 3 and 4 deep sleep in infants, and increased breast feeding, parents must be informed that bed sharing has never been shown to be protective against SIDS." Now, I thought that was one of the conclusions of the New Zealand Cot Death Study as well as the recent one released by the CDC (I think) here in the US. Am I wrong? We need more help. Anyone have access to any of Helen Ball's research they can fax or email? I can't find it on OVID. This list has provided us so much help already -that is why we are having this meeting in the first place- that I'm hopeful you can provide more. Whoever it was that put Patty Donohue-Carey in touch with me, thanks a million! She is a fount of info and support. Any more out there?
