I have the recording directed by Christopher Hogwood with Catherine Bott as Dido, and enjoy it, though I'm not so convinced by the hamming up of the witches' parts, something which happened also in the performance by Les Arts Florissants which I went to at the Barbican last week. But then the classicist in me has problems with the witches anyway. I recently bought a 2-CD bargain set of Purcell anthems performed by Christ Church Cathedral choir, Oxford. It has all my favourite anthems on it and the performances are pleasant, if a little lacking in dynamic range and on the slow side. Now all I need is an opportunity to sing 'Jehova, quam multi sunt hostes mei', which remains at the top of my wanted list of anthems I've never performed. Of course it needs a Gostling-style bass soloist. Virginia Knight [log in to unmask] Personal homepage: http://www.ilrt.bris.ac.uk/~ggvhk/virginia.html
