Madetoja was a Finnish composer who lived from 1887-1947, studied with both Sibelius and d'Indy, and belonged to the same generation as Aare Merikanto. A lot of influences are evident in his music, but he is able to combine them with Finnish folk music to create an individual voice. I only have three Madetoja cds, but would recommend them all: Finlandia FACD 011: Symphony #2, performed by the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony #3, performed by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Finlandia 3984-21440-2: The Ostrobothnians (Opera in 3 Acts), and the Ostrobothnians Suite. A truly wonderful opera that would probably be extremely popular if it weren't in Finnish. This version came out in 1998, and is far superior to an earlier release. (Jorma Hynninen sings the lead in both versions.) Ondine ODE 714-2: Juha (Opera in 6 Tableaux). Hynninen sings the lead here, also. Patricia Price
