Mary I have been thinking about this. I believe some posters wondered how mom's dental cysts could cause bf problems, but I was thinking surely it is the baby who has the cysts. Yes! I can think of some things that might help: 1. Put some local (safe) anesthetic on the cysts and give baby tylenol or ibuprofen (whatever pedi recommends) to help with the pain and inflammation (ibuprofen for this) that maybe is causing baby to bite down or rub on mom. What has the HCP told mom about how long these cysts will last? Do they spontaneously resolve? When the teeth come? 2. Check with the pedi or dentist to see if anything can be done to remove or ?file down the cysts - hopefully something very gentle can be done 3. I really don't want to suggest this, but a nipple shield? If this is something that is going to really interfere with pleasurable bf, cause trauma and maybe infection at some point, and maybe lead to weaning of this very young baby, I would opt for intervention if it is not too invasive for the baby. P.s. has anyone seen yeast problems in moms' using lanolin for several weeks? These moms use it just to "prevent" problems or when pumping long term for nicu pts. I only recommend it for moist wound healing, but not as a prophylaxis, along with antibiotic ointment at times, of Jacks' apno cream. Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC Violet Louisiana, s.e.
