Regarding Glenn Gould's humming, I distinctly remember as a classical
music neophyte when I purchased my first Glenn Gould recording. It was
an album of the Kleine Preluden und Fughetten (sp!), and I had no idea
what I was purchasing or who GG was. I took the album home, put it on and
was mortified to hear singing, no less what seemed out of tune - like a
piano record overdubbed on an old choral or singing record. I immediately
marched the album back to the store and demanded a refund for the obviously
defective album. Boy, did the sales clerks get a kick out of me. Since
then I have come to overlook (overhear?) Gould's self-accompaniment and
enjoy his artistry for what it is - always interesting, intellectually
challenging, musically stimulating, and usually enjoyable.
