Peter Varley's post on Grace Williams' 2nd symphony and Ballads has my full
support, and reminded me of another name worth mentioning - Doreen
Carwithen. I have a very attractive Chandos CD (CHAN9524) of two
overtures, a suite for orchestra and a concerto for piano and strings. She
was William Alwyn's amanuensis and later married him, but already had quite
a work list, including a number of film scores. There is also a Chandos CD
of her chamber music which I've not heard.
