The first piece of music for a blasted world that comes to mind is
Penderecki's "Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima." This is the best
evocation of a nuclear attack I've heard...it's quite eerie.

On a more contemplative note, "Neptune" from The Planets conjures up
desolation very nicely.  And, as a farewell to humanity, what could be
more touching than the last movement of Das Lied von der Erde?
