Music of Deborah Nodel Gordon to Be Performed at Legendary Apollo Theater
as Part of Beyond the Tears Awards Ceremony on May 19

Music by Deborah Nodel Gordon will be performed on Saturday, May 19 at
the legendary Apollo Theater, 253 W. 125th Street in Harlem, New York,
as part of a very special "Beyond the Tears" Humanitarian Awards Ceremony,
beginning at 7 PM that evening. This award ceremony and concert will
honor Winnie Mandela, Princess Senator Florence Ita-Giwa of Nigeria,
Professor Babatunde Osotimehinn, Minister Christine Walker and others
who have done exceptional work in the field of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Ms. Nodel Gordon's Dreams Are Never Free for two sopranos and piano
will be performed by sopranos Jamet Pittman of Three Mo' Divas and
Ramona, with the composer at the piano. The song, Dreams Are Never
Free, is inspired by the words of poets and religious leaders from
several continents. The lyrics start with the words of South African,
Moslem poet, Don Mattera's love song to Africa, Dreaming Was Never Free.
Then traveling over an "ocean vast salted by tears" the song draws
strength from the words of Martin Luther King's dream followed by the
poetry of a 16-year-old South African AIDS orphan, who turns from sorrow
to a celebration of life. Interspersed is the question asked by Rabbi
Hillel circa 100 B.C., "If not now, when?" The song draws together the
words of a Jew, a Moslem and Christians from both sides of the Atlantic
to sing of the dream of freedom and its price.

Tickets for "Beyond the Tears" Award Ceremony are $35, $50, $75 each,
and are available from the Apollo Theater at 212-531-5305 or by visiting
http://www.apollotheater.com/box_office.html. Net proceeds from the
event will go towards the SACAIDS Project.

Pianist-composer Deborah Nodel Gordon received a scholarship to study
at the Juilliard School at age 9. She studied with Leonard Eisner, Nadia
Reisenberg, and Oxana Yablonskaya. She is the winner of various piano
competitions including the first prize at the Young American Artist
Competition at age 14 and high awards at the WQXR Piano Competition.
She has performed at many venues, including various universities, BAM,
WNYC, and the Church Center of the United Nations. She is the recipient
of the Judith Grayson Memorial Award and numerous awards from Meet the
Composer and ASCAP. Her work has been performed by international
prize-winning violinists and singers, including soloists from both the
Metropolitan Opera and the City Opera. Her Sonata for Piano and Violin
has been programmed by the Montgomery Symphony Society. She has performed
her works at the United Nations International Human Rights Day and
International Women's Day. Ms. Nodel Gordon was commissioned by the
Project People Foundation to write Dreams Are Never Free for their
Celebrating Life national concert series, which premiered April 22
in Delray Beach, Florida.
