Quintet of the Americas to Present Borrowing the Theme Concert At Flushing
Library on January 6, Including Music by Queens Composers James Cohn and
Gaudencio Thiago de Mello

New York, NY - The Quintet of the Americas will present 'Borrowing the
Theme,' a concert on Saturday, January 6, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.  at The
Flushing Library Auditorium, 41-17 Main Street in Flushing, Queens, New
York.  Special guest artist will be Gaudencio Thiago de Mello, organic
percussion.

The Quintet will return to the Flushing Library for a concert of music
based on themes borrowed from TV soundtracks, older music and sounds
from nature.  "Mozart Fantasy," a new work by Douglaston composer James
Cohn, will be featured.  Mr.  Cohn was commissioned by the Quintet to
composer this work in honor of Mozart's 250th Birthday year.  Also
featured will be new works by Brazilian composer Gaudencio Thiago de
Mello.  Rob Paterson's 'Suburban Waltz Fantasy', filled with theme songs
from old TV shows, Elliott Schwartz' 'Bird Bath' which includes bird
calls and quotes of other pieces related to birds, Concerto No.  2 after
Vivaldi (originally for organ) arranged for wind quintet by Mordechai
Rechtman, a suite of Brazilian Songs by Ernesto Nazareth and As Proesas
de Nolasco by Pixinguinha will also be performed.

Douglaston resident James Cohn has written solo, chamber, choral and
orchestral works, and his catalog includes 3 string quartets, 5 piano
sonatas and 8 symphonies.  He was awarded a Queen Elisabeth of Belgium
Prize for his Symphony No.  2 (premiered at Brussels) and an A.I.D.E.M.
prize for his Symphony No.  4 (premiered in Florence at the Maggio
Musicale).  He has had many performances of his choral and chamber music,
and world-wide use of his music commissioned for television and cinema.

Forest Hills resident Gaudencio Thiago de Mello is well-known for his
jazz writing and his performances as an innovative percussionist on
instruments he has made out of things found in nature.  Visit him online

The Quintet of the Americas, consisting of flutist Sato Moughalian,
oboist Matt Sullivan, clarinetist Edward Gilmore, hornist Barbara Oldham
and bassoonist Laura Koepke, was formed in Bogota, Colombia in 1976 by
U.S.  citizens who were principal wind players in the Colombian National
Orchestra.  The group relocated to New York City in 1979 and has since
enjoyed an international career that has taken them to concert halls
throughout the Americas, the Caribbean Asia, including annual performances
at Manhattan's Americas Society since 1982.  Two time recipients of
ASCAP-Chamber Music America Awards for Adventuresome Programming, the
Quintet's repertoire represents works from composers with a wide-range
of aesthetic viewpoints.  They have recorded for CRI, Newport Classics,
MMC and XLNT.  Their latest CDs are Karel Husa: Recollections on New
World and Dancing in Colombia on the MSR label.  The Quintet has been a
past recipient of the CMA Commissioning Award in for a commission by
David Chaitkin and a three-year Residency Award for work in Chicago.
