Zaimont's "Doubles" Cited As Great American Ensemble Work

Judith Lang Zaimont's oboe and piano duo, Doubles, has just been voted
one of 101 'Great American Ensemble Works' by Chamber Music America,
from among 1,000 works nominated for this accolade. Zaimont's 1993 duo
joins such recent classics as Barber's "Dover Beach", Crumb's "Ancient
Voices of Children", Copland's Clarinet Quintet, Carter's Cello Sonata,
Harbison's Quintet (winds), Ruth Crawford's String Quartet, Dave Brubeck's
"Unsquare Dance", and significant works by Adams, Tower, Rorem, Zwilich
and other notable composers.

In 2004, the membership of Chamber Music America nominated American works
for small ensembles that they believed to be "the most significant in
the repertoire". From over 1,000 nominations, an independent panel chose
101 of the most-nominated pieces that best represent the diversity of
style and instrumentation that comprises CMA's membership, citing these
as "Great American Ensemble Works". To see the entire list of works
cited visit: http://www.chamber-music.org/programs/greatworkswinners.asp.

This is the second significant citation of the piece, which was also
selected for the prestigious "Century List" published in the June 1999
issue of Chamber Music Magazine. This list of 100 works by 100 Twentieth
Century composers from around the world was compiled by Frank J. Oteri
to identify "the vital music of this century" and to stimulate radio
broadcasts of music of our time. Selected for its structural ingenuity
and virtuosic writing for both instruments, "Doubles" was characterized
by Oteri as "a piece that shows off how beautiful the sound of an oboe
is!"

Doubles was commissioned from Judith Lang Zaimont by oboist Lisa Kozenko
for premiere in 1994 at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall at her Artists
International prize-winning recital. DOUBLES was written with grant
support from American Composers Forum, and the work has been recorded
by Ms. Kozenko and Dana Burnett for an all-Zaimont chamber music CD,
"Neon Rhythm" (Arabesque). The work is published by the international
double-reed house, Jeanne, Inc., and is frequently performed (including
featured performances at the Society of Composers International and
International Double Reed Society meetings over the last decade).

Judith Lang Zaimont is internationally recognized for her distinctive
style, characterized by its expressive strength and dynamism. Most
recently she has been Featured Composer for the National Federation of
Music Clubs, Commissioned Composer of the California Music Teachers
Association, Commissioned Composer for the International San Antonio
Piano Competition, and recipient of an Aaron Copland Award. Her music
is widely performed throughout the U.S. and Europe and has been recorded
for the Naxos, Koch International Classics, Arabesque, Milken Family
Foundation, Albany, Jeanne, Leonarda, Northeastern, and 4Tay labels.

Ms. Zaimont was awarded First Prize in the international 1995 McCollin
Competition for Composers (for "Symphony No. 1", performed by the
Philadelphia Orchestra in 1996). Her biography is found in most standard
reference works (e.g., New Grove's), and she is the subject both of
individual chapters in specialist volumes and major articles in professional
journals, including Clavier and Chamber Music magazine, the latter of
which can be read at http://www.jamesarts.com/releases/dec03/JLZ_121903.htm.
Her latest reSOUNDings Newsletter can be read at

information about Ms. Zaimont, including sound clips of many of her
compositions, is available at her website http://www.jzaimont.com/.
