COMING UP ON PERFORMANCE TODAY JULY  9 - 13, 2001

KORVA COLEMAN IS HOST

Monday, JULY 9

Hour 1 -- And the winner is...:  Regular weekday host Fred Child is on the
line from Wyoming to help Korva announce the winner of the PT Midsummer
Music Contest.  The winner of the contest and a guest will spend a week at
next year's Grand Teton Music Festival.  We'll also hear Darius Milhaud's
"Creation of the World" from this summer's Festival.

Hour 2 -- Beethoven and Bronfman...in Baltimore:  This hour we'll hear a
performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.  3 played by Yefim Bronfman
and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.  Yuri Temirkanov conducts.

Tuesday, JULY 10

Hour 1 -- Remembering Mitchell Stern:  Violinist and instructor Mitchell
Stern passed away a few months ago, but the remembrance of Stern hasn't
faded from the hearts and minds of those whom he taught.  Commentator and
former Stern student Adam Baer shares his memory of his teacher, Michael
Stern.

Hour 2 -- LIVE in Aspen:  PT weekday host Fred Child joins us live
on location at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado.  Fred introduces
highlights from Monday night's gala 65th birthday concert for festival
music director David Zinman.

Wednesday, JULY 11

Hour 1 -- Guilty pleasures:  Do you ever tune into the radio and hear a
song that you claim you can't stand, but find yourself humming along? This
is the music you hate to love, and commentator and Time magazine critic
Terry Teachout tells us all about it.  Don't worry--humming along to the
music is permitted.

Hour 2 -- Musical offerings:  We'll hear a sampling of music performed in
concert.

Thursday, JULY 12

Hour 1 -- St. Lawrence reaches out:  Members of the St. Lawrence String
Quartet are busy performing around the country, but they've managed to take
time out to work with amateur musicians.  Reporter Joel Rose gives us the
scoop.

Hour 2 -- Basic Mendelssohn:  PT Basic Record Library Curator Ted Libbey
escorts Korva into the Overture wing of the library.  Ted will recommend
three great recordings of the overtures by Felix Mendelssohn, including
the seasonal favorite, "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

Friday, JULY 13

Hour 1 -- Joseph Smith on Salieri and Mozart:  Piano Today columnist
and piano gumshoe Joseph Smith investigates the odd musical relationship
between rivals W.  A.  Mozart and Antonio Salieri.  Smith will also perform
music from Mozart's set of variations on a theme from Salieri's opera "La
fiera de Venecia." Hour 2 -- A selection of recent concert performances
from the United States and abroad.
