The piano is ridiculously loud and clamorous in the Rubinstein, and his
playing here lacks much of its characteristic charm. The sound is bad,
particularly for the day and age in which it was recorded. As for the
Grainger, I enjoy it very much. Although he was clearly past his prime,
it is more than just an interesting historical document. Despite many
technical slip-ups here, his playing is clearly incisive and imaginative
and shows more than a glimmer of what he truly must have been.
