Some folks prefer Shostakovich well-buttoned and smooth, but I
prefer his music on the rough-and-ready side. Kondrashin fills the bill
perfectly, although the recorded sound is something to deal with. I have
been slowly acquiring the Haitink recordings on Decca, and the sound is a
big improvement on Kondrashin; Haitink might be a good mainstream choice.
Maxim Shostakovich has recorded quite a few of the symphonies and provides
many insights. I'm not familiar with the Rostropovich set, and I've also
been interested in the Wigglesworth emerging series on Bis. But, I always
come back to Kondrashin which has been issued in various reincarnations.
I have no idea if it's currently available.
