Call up your local compounding pharmacy and talk to the pharmacist about the
legality of compounding drugs. It's fascinating. It reminds me of the idea
of guilds during the Middle Ages. Pharmacists guard their perogative to mix
up drugs and drug compounds VERY zealously. They are the ones who make the
decisions and they maintain lists of approved (by them) drugs at the
national level. I know in Austin that if a doc orders a form of menopausal
treatment that involves a paste of wild yams that a woman can rub into her
body this does not exist as an actual product. However, your compounding
pharmacist can make it up for you. Say a child needs a form of potent pain
relief and needs it in a paste form or a flavored form, the compounder can
mix it even if this isn't a commercial product. Domperidone was covered by
a patent, now expired. It's in the public domain and while I dont' think
there are plans to market it commercially, it's perfectly legal and within
the jurisdiction, so to speak, of a compounder to mix it up with
prescription. What I do is inform the MD when, in my opinion, a
galactagogue will help. I make the remark that domperidone is now available
from the local compounding pharm. and cite the ref. for the double blind,
placebo control study. If the mother has a hx of depression, I might remark
that "Mrs. Smith has a hx of depression, which should be factored into any
decision about which galactagogue to select."
