I have to say that I fully agree with the MD in this case. Fe does not cause constipation (contrary to popular belief) and premie babies really need it, a multivitamin is also a good thing for a premie that is exclusively breastfed.  There is nothing wrong with the breastmilk of course, but their needs (both from prematurity itself and because of the NICU stay) are just different than those of a term baby.

Hi all,
 
I am helping a mom who had her baby in march - he was in the NICU for three
months... is home now.. the pediatrician wants vitamins and iron supplements
for the baby. Mom noticed constipation from the vitamins, stopped using...
but now the doctor underlined it's importance so she will start again.
The doctor had the nerve to say that iron supplements don't constipate.  I
need some sound medical advice to pass along to this mom so she can make an
educated decision.  Whats the scoop on this?

They also have him on a diaretic.
 
She has used ONLY breastmilk from the beginning (a miracle!). NO ARIFICIAL
BABY MILK at all for this baby... she pumps and uses a bottle (we are
working on transitioning him to the breast).
