Brenda,
Okay, you wanted "hands-on" techniques, here goes. First I prepare the
couples (most of the fathers in our area attend breastfeeding class with
their partners) by explaining that the best way to teach positioning and
correct latch on is by demonstrating-on myself. I then grasp my own breast
and show the best method of getting baby latched on and the various
positions that can be used. Have even gone so far as to lie down on a table
(elevated position for better viewing for those people in the back) to
demonstrate the side lying position. I usually don't use this method of
teaching until later in the class, after I've gotten a "feel" for the
group, and whether they would be receptive to this method. Have not gotten
a negative response yet. I also explain to the group that because of our
culture, most women are not familiar or necessarily comfortable with
handling their own breasts. Since this is an integral part of
breastfeeding, they will be ahead of the game if they practice holding
their breast and breastfeeding (using a stuffed animal or such in place of
the baby before they deliver. To lighten the mood, if necessary, I point
out that they can do this in the privacy of their own home, unlike me who
has to do it in front of 30 or more people.
