Couldn't log into the archives for this one so I am posing this question to the group: Mom BF'ing for 6 mos. and small lump noticed lateral to lt. areola. Surgeon advised surgical intervention for dx. Done on 11/17 but abcess formed. Surgeon chose in I&D of abcess and antibiotics. However, w/ the initial sx, mom was advised to NOT BF because of "betadine strips" but could pump. Pumping was painful and so now the abcess. The cavity is healing (no BF on that side) slowly w/ daily irrigations and packing. The severed ducts cont. to drain milk which mom approx. about 2 oz/day. She is very worried that when this finally granulates in, that the trappped milk will cause another abcess. She is on antibiotics and cont. to BF on other breast. I have told her that I don't know if this would happen or not. My best guess would be that the acini cells would eventually shut down. Although I didn't express it to her, I am also concerned about a fistula forming. Anyone w/ experience w/
this sort of thing? She is coming to office tomorrow after an appt. w/ the surgeon and wound specialist. I haven't had a face to face conversation w/ her as she lives some distance away. Her PCP is urging her to wean (as he thinks she will heal faster) but her midwife is enc. to to keep BF as weaning may further complicate the problem. Mom is very upset and we are trying to focus on the present and future and not what maybe could have been done. I can be emailed privately at [log in to unmask]
