IN my humble observational opinion..........doesn't colostrum act as a
stomach washer in the first 24 hours.....sort of an emetic in a sense? Many
babies look so miserable and do not want to eat on that first day. They are
spitting up small amounts of mucousy excretions. This always causes a
dilemma........if they do not eat at all, then by day 2 when they are
supposed to be released, they have lost too much weight, and there is the
chance that the mom will be sent home, and the baby will stay. The weight
loss will cause some of the younger doctors to start pushing artificial
milk, and then the problems start. In order to avoid this, I recommend that
moms start giving small amounts of colostrum on a tiny spoon. Almost
always, this causes the baby to bring up large amounts of excretions, and
after than his whole face changes, he looks relieved, and soon after starts
rooting. Is there any evidence that colostrum on the first day has
properties which may "cleanse" the stomach?
