The use of the term may render your presentation ineffective, if
indeed you are addressing persons with
a preconceived notion about their "knowledge base" I recommend that
you approach your audience
with some gentle recommendations related to breastfeeding success.
The introduction of a natural
nipple, ie, that of the mother, is preferable. Describe differences
regarding sucking patterns, the early
impact of that first feeding relative to "imprinting" and learning to
strip the sinuses and extract milk.
Speak about the transfer of the breastmilk/colostrum to the infant
and the fact that the mother gives
and the infant receives-not only nourishment, but the vital IGA, etc,
etc....Speak to the relationship
of the mother and infant and our goal as facilitators. Describe the
introduction of an alternate feeding
method, ie, a rubber bottle teat, to be about three weeks following
the birth, therein, not interfering with
our goal to assist in breastfeeding, and preventing a "preference"
for any other feeding method other
than that of the infant's own mother. This can be tricky, As VC
would say: "Sometimes, those who
are teaching don't know when their nipples are confused". Keep it
light, touch on it ever so delicately
as though you were landing in a pit of fire, descend., touch only to
toast (never burn) and get the
h--- out of the fire and stay out. Move on to higher plains. Good
Luck.
