One book I have that discusses the appropriate use of herbs, homeopathy,
accupressure, and nutritional supplements during pregnancy and lactation is
Natural Healing for the Pregnant Woman, by Elizabeth Burch, N.D., and Judith
Sachs. I have more than one herbal resource that states that echinacea may
be used during both pregnancy and lactation. No, these aren't based on
traditional medical studies, if you need that sort of reference.
Personally, I have found Echinacea to be effective for full blown mastitis,
and have been able to avoid antibiotic treatment. (Used in conjunction w/
bedrest, heat, massage, and of course, frequent breastfeeding).

When a mom asks about herbals, I tell her that I have no formal training in
this area, but I do give her the information in the resources that I have.
( We don't have herbalists or homeopaths in our area to refer too. )
Warmly
Lisa Huntze, LLLL, IBCLC
