Hello Wise ones,
I have a mom I am working with, who also happens to be my sister in law.
Her baby is 9 months old. She was suffering from a breast infection which
her doc treated with a course of Augmentin, and then it recurred two weeks
later. She also had 3 blebs which she managed to get rid of. She had been
feeling pain which she described as the awful pain of thrush shooting
through the breast- excruciating while nursing. In her words much worse than
labor. In addition to the basics of massage and how to really empty the
breast, Lecithin, etc, I advised her to get a milk culture. The milk
culture came back with Pseudomonas bacteria (which I have never heard of but
her doc says is a GI bacteria) and her blood work came back with strep. She
is actually feeling much better now. Her doctor was shocked that that
bacteria was in the milk, and wanted to rush to treat it. Actually, he was
shocked at the suggestion to culture the milk in the first place, so imagine
his thoughts when he saw that one! What does this mean? She feels all is
fine now, so she should ignore it, but what is that doing in the milk?
Should it be treated?
Thanks for any info,
Jessica Billowitz, IBCLC
