Marilyn,
I think the most critical thing for new docs entering the field to
get firmly implanted in their brains is that:
Breastfeeding really matters.
Nothing else is "close to breastmilk".
There are definite risks to not breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is the norm against which everything else is (should
be) measured.
Breastfeeding "works". (or the human race wouldn't have survived
this long!)

Most, if not all, the problems referred to on LN that stem from
unfortunate advice from docs starts with the fact that they buy into
the attitude that "breastfeeding is nice, but formula is a good,
acceptable alternative". If they don't start with a firm belief if
the importance of breastfeeding, then suggesting supplementing,
weaning, "not good enough milk", etc. etc. etc. seems an easy
approach to any problem. Specific approaches to problems might be a
second lecture, but I firmly believe that if you have only one hour,
the basic attitude and appreciation for breastfeeding is the most
important subject. They can always refer patients to you or call
you (or a local LC wherever they wind up) and get input on specific
problems when they occur.

Just my humble opinion.
