Emily asks:
I have a similar question, I am a licensed dietitian and I provide
breastfeeding education to Moms on our OB unit on call. I am
referred to as
a breastfeeding resource. The nurses on the floor assist Mom and
when they
feel Mom needs more help they call one of us (whoever is on call).
The other
"resource staff" are RNs. I am concerned when I get a Dr's order for
a
lactation consult? Since I am licensed to do a consult for infant
feeding as
dietitian - do you think that covers me?

You'd have to check your scope of practice for dieticians. I assume
from the way you worded your comments that you are not IBCLC, so
that scope of practice wouldn't apply. However, I would think that
if you are "allowed" to take a doctor's order for dietary consult,
that helping baby to nurse would be part of that. Again, it depends
on the RD scope of practice unless you are IBCLC.
