As many others on this list have said, I find the comments about
tongue-ties interesting. I have to wonder if there is any connection
between ultrasound and increase in tongue-tied infants. A few years ago
I remember reading about research (I wish I could remember where) that
suggested that ultrasound could interfere with nerve cells
differentiating. I don't think most women realize how much baby is
exposed to ultrasound, because most don't know that doppler for
heartbeat uses ultrasound. I didn't, or I would have refused it.

I also think that long-term consequences should be considered about
tongue-tied infants. When my son was born, I had sore nipples for about
the first year, although they were worse for the first 3 months. I knew
it shouldn't be like that, but couldn't find a way to fix it. When he
was almost a year old, I noticed signs of a subtle tongue-tie, and
learned about a family history that might suggest tongue-ties in my
husband's family. Because he was too old for the simpler procedure, we
did not have the tongue-tie treated. He almost completely weaned at 2
years old, and I have to think this may be due to the tongue issues,
because this is awefully young for a child to wean himself. How many
mothers may be not having baby clipped because there isn't a big problem
when baby is small, and then be having premature weaning of their baby
as a toddler?

I'm not saying I have answers, just speculating here.
