The first pediatrician that Doug "taught" (he was first baby in practice
who did not get cereal at 3 weeks and who nursed--well, a LOOONNNNNNGGGG
time) had some smarts, in spite of his youth (at 26, I kept wanting to
tweak him on the cheek!--he looked SO young!). He told me that
breastfeeding mothers nearly always brought their babies in three times for
every one of bottle-feeding moms. Why? Because they sensed something was
wrong Before he could detect it. He paid attention to those things, too.
He once told me, "a mother knows her baby better than anyhone else. Why
wouldn't I listen to her?" With such an attitude, he made it much easier
for moms to call for the smallest problems. And that generated a large
practice in no time! WOuld that all were so smart.
Def. of LC service: "We are all faced with a series of great opportunities
brilliantly disguised as impossible situations."
