Dear Loni,

There is indeed some rationale for this. In some cases of severe oversupply, when all else fails, then a short course of BCPs, usually containing estrogen, can sometimes bring things under control. My questions would be: Although green stools are one of the signs of oversupply, were there any others? Was this a "normal" situation of early postpartum oversupply which usually resolves fairly easily, or was this a case of unremitting oversupply which was not responding to normal measures? BCPs are a big gun to bring in before other strategies have been tried. The pill may quickly lead to an undersupply if she is not properly monitored.

Warmly,
Sharon Knorr, BSMT, ASCP, IBCLC
