"I remember reading or hearing in a lecture or conference that oxytocin
and cortisol share receptor sites and so stress could indeed inhibit
letdown because the cortisol would bind first leaving the oxytocin
ineffective. I will look for the information or notes. Page 200 of R.
Lawerence's Breastfeeding: A guide for the medical profession, (3rd
edition) lists cold, pain and emotional stress as causing inhibition of
the MER."

I've heard this too. But is it true about the oxytocin - corstisol receptor
theory? Doesn't make much physiological sense? I've been following this
thread and was also wondering if a high temperature (i.e. above 39oC) can
also have an effect. Had an n=2 personal experience with this on Monday when
I developed strep. throat. Thought I was getting the flu so didn't do
anything about it. By Monday evening I was really cooking and didn't get a
MER despite trying for 30 minutes (very patient baby!). Then got my
temperature down and voila - MER back. Same happened Tuesday morning. By
then, I'd figured it out!

Is this something you hear from other mothers with high temperatures and
infections? Be interested to know if body temperature can have an influence?
Of course there is the pain influence - although I have the temp. under
control but still got the pain and the MER is back working normally.
